Mill practice or special packaging codes may designate alternate securement applications or strapping with higher strength ratings.
Overall strapping that unitizes slit cuts into a multi-cut lift, must be 1¼” (32mm)
Strapping, notch joints, crimp joints, die-cut sealless joints and spot-welded sealless joints shall meet minimum breaking and joint efficiency strengths as described in the latest edition of ASTM D3953, Standard Specification for Strapping, Flat Steel and Seals.
-All rail shipment must use min. 1¼” x .029 ga. Strapping for all applications.

TAPE: Where a code requires tape, unless the code specifies otherwise tape is not allowed to make contact with the steel. Where the instructions are to “Tape to the strap (banding) the tape must not exceed the width of the strap.

PAPER or POLY Wrapping: (coded ‘W’ or ‘VW’ or ‘WW’)

‘W’ Indicates waterproof paper or poly used for wrapping coils and cut lengths.

''VW’ Requires precut sheet wrap that contains a non-nitrate based condensation or vapour corrosion inhibitor (VCI). It is important that seams are tight and no gaps allow air to reduce the effectiveness of the VCI. Paper ID inserts must be properly sealed.

‘WW’ “Winter Wrap” is required. Minimum Construction: Kraft Paper laminated with Polyethylene and reinforced with a min. 5X5 polyethylene scrim and treated with nitrate free VCI. Substitution is subject to approval by Dofasco Inc. Metallurgy Dept. - Packaging and Loading. Apply in the same manner as ‘VCI’.

‘VK’ Represents VCI Poly (Plastic) wrap applied via Cocoon or Axial Wrap Process.
NOTE: Material requiring VCI wrap designated (VK) processed at an outside pickle line (09) will be hand wrapped with.

Unless the code’s description specifies differently:

Wrapping, not meeting above descriptions, must be approved by Dofasco Metallurgy Department. No logos or markings allowed.
1.	A minimum of two ID straps must be applied over the wrapping. Polyester straps may be used in this application. All strapping is steel unless specified in the code.
2.	The eye of horizontal coils must be protected by paper equal to the outside wrap (Exception Cocoon Wrap).
3.	If code requires wrapping and Flanges, Flanges shall be placed on horizontal coils after wrapping, attached with a minimum of 2 ID bands.
4.	All wrapped and/or shrouded coils must display an arrow on the wrap indicating the direction of the coil wind, clockwise or counter-clockwise. (See S82 Detail or S19)

SPECIFIC OD WRAP LOCATION: (COILS EYE HORIZONTAL)
Where a code specifies the location of the END OF THE OD WRAP, wrapped coils must be clearly marked to indicate the direction of the OD wrap and the placement of the end of the wrap. See S82 Detail.

Note: Wrapped or shrouded eye horizontal slit cut lifts
The number of cuts must be clearly displayed on each side of the wrap on the outside diameter of the package.

Paper or Poly Shrouding (Coded ''U'' or ''KU'' or ''NU'' or ''WU'' - i.e. ''200U'')
Waterproof Paper, poly or poly bags over the lift to protect from dirt or moisture while in storage or transit. Shrouds must be capable of being removed easily and therefore held with tape or light strapping. Refer to Coils Section codes and the Decoder Page for more detailed descriptions.

Platforms: Coils - Eye Vertical
Hardwood deck boards and base runners.
Constructed as a square.
Base runner height: Minimum 4"
Platforms or spacer blocks must be dry or covered with wrapping.
O.D. edges of coil must be inside the platform''s perimeter edge (0 to -2 in).

Base Runners: (Min. 3 x 4 in.)

<= 32" x 32"	Min. 2	Min. 20" space between runners.
> 32" x 32"	Min. 3	Min. 9" space between runners.

Deck Boards:

<= 32" x 32"	3 deck boards	Minimum 1" thick

a) Standard Skeleton (Coded ''P'') Spaced deck boards recess nailed to base runners.
b) Solid Deck (Coded ''XP'') Deck boards placed together to form a solid deck, recess nailed to base runners.
The number in a packaging code that follows the letter ''P'' is the minimum actual height of the base runners. (i.e. ''P4'': minimum 4 in. (102 mm) height.

Separators (Coils):
Strapped* or unstrapped lumer between coils to facilitate handling or provide edge protection. umber must be dry or wrapped.
Eye Vertical lifts may use plastic separators where noted in the code.

*Straps used to secure separators DO NOT replace coil straps.
Eye Horizontal lifts must contain 4" lumber separating the cuts.
(3½" dressed) (I.e. S-138)

Platforms: Coils-Eye Horizontal
Hardwood deck boards and base runners.

Base Runners

Coil width	<= 36":	2 base runners - Min. 20" spacing
Coil width	> 36":	3 base runners - Min. 9" spacing

Base runner length must be equal (or slightly less than) the coil''s outside diameter.

Deck boards
Beveled to minimize contact damage.
Dimension must be equal to width of coil.

Platforms: cut lengths
Hardwood deck boards and base runners.

a) Standard Skeleton Platform (Coded ''P'')
Crosswise deck boards over lengthwise base runners. Recessed nailing not required unless specified in packaging code''s description.

b) Reversed Skeleton Platform (Coded ''RP'')
Lengthwise deck boards over crosswise base runners. Recessed nailing not required unless specified in packaging codes description.

c) Solid Platform (''X'' is added to the packaging code as follow ''XP'' or ''RAP'')
Lengthwise or crosswise deck boards (direction as explained above) placed together to form a solid support, nailed to base runners.

The number in a packaging code, that follows the letter ''P'', is the minimum nominal height of the base runners. I i.e. ''P4'': minimum 4 in. (102 mm) height.

SEPARATORS (Cut Lengths):
Unstrapped hardwood lumber between multiple lifts.
Guidelines for the minimum number of deckboards, separators and base runners for Platform construction or regular packaging of cut lengths, are located at Crosswise Cutlength Requirements and Lengthwise Cutlength Requirements.

CORE LINERS ( Coils )
"Minimum thickness 0.125" (3.2mm) or as per code. Core liners shall be centered in the coil. Width tolerance, unless contradicted by the code, shall be + 0.0" to -0.500" of the coils width. Undersize / split core liners are not acceptable.

Window Seal Protectors (Coils)
Window seal protectors are required under circumference strap seals. They are also required under inside diameter strap seals if located on the outside diameter of the coil. Exception: Hot rolled coils; Galv. physical quality coils. Exception: Material produced in-house at operations using automated banding equipment.

CORNER PROTECTORS
Manufactured metal, fibreboard or corrugated fibre or plastic edge protection to shield from the product''s sharp edges and prevent product damage.

	Minimum size: 1 3/4" X 1 3/4" X 2 1/4" wide
	Minimum thickness: Metal - .028 ga.
	Other products - .080 ga.

Mill practice or special packaging codes may designate specific corners.

Non-HSLA Coils under .290 Gauge:

	Optional on mill edge coils.
	Must be applied under the overall unitizing straps on a multi-cut lift.
	Optional under the individual slit cut straps within a multi-cut lift.
	Must be applied under individual straps on slit edge coils when the packaging code specifies that the coil will be packaged to ship as a single lift.
	Optional when the edge is protected with metal wrap.
	Must be applied under the securement straps on a platform lift.

Non-HSLA coils .290 gauge and greater :

Follow the HSLA corner protection guideline on page 5 of this manual.

HSLA Coils or Coils With Grade > 300 & > .060 GA:

	Follow the HSLA corner protection guideline on page 5 of this manual.
	Exception: Material produced (HSLA or Non-HSLA) in-house at operations using automated banding equipment.

Cut lengths:

Must be applied at all corners.

Optional when the edge is protected with metal wrap.

When applying ID straps on coils, requiring Plastic Flanges, be sure to not place the strap in these notches.
