Regulatory Processes

Environmental impacts at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Hamilton facilities are overseen by:

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment’s approvals program is designed to ensure that all facilities operating in Ontario do so in accordance with relevant legislation including the Ontario Water Resources Act  and the Environmental Protection Act.  Certificates of Approval (COAs) are required for all facilities that release emissions to the atmosphere, discharge contaminants to ground and surface water, provide potable water supplies, or store, transport, process or dispose of waste.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco has COA’s for all appropriate facilities.  ArcelorMittal Dofasco applies for new or amended COA’s as our operations change. Please refer to the Ontario MOE Alternative Standards Process section for more information on current applications.

In 2005, the MOE introduced Regulation 419/05 which is phasing in new and much more stringent air emission standards for industrial facilities in Ontario, including ArcelorMittal Dofasco. Under the Regulation, a facility that is not able to meet the standards may apply for an alternative site-specific air standard, allowing time to implement an Action Plan of emission-reduction projects, and the development of new and better technologies to help to further reduce emissions. For more information, please refer to the MOE Alternative Standards Process section.
