Steelmaker commits to maintaining community investment for 2010

Hamilton October 30, 2009: ArcelorMittal Dofasco launched its 2009 Report to the Community today, and announced a campaign to support and raise awareness of the contributions made by its community partners, who are facing significant challenges due to the recent financial crisis.

The Community Strength campaign will underscore the company’s continued investment in the community, regardless of difficult economic circumstances, and highlighting 7 sectors that are key components of a healthy community.

Beginning with the United Way and ending with Social Services, the campaign will also focus on Education, Healthcare, Arts, Sports and Recreation, and the Environmental sectors. In addition, ArcelorMittal Dofasco CEO Juergen Schachler announced that, despite a difficult year for the company and its customers, AMDofasco remains committed to the approximately $3Million the company invests in key community events and organizations.

Mr. Schachler met with a large gathering of employees and community partners this morning and stated his hope for what the program will achieve: “Our success is not possible without a strong community, and we hope that this effort will raise awareness of the important work that you do which helps so many.”

ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s community support is a combination of corporate donations, community event sponsorship, and personal payroll contributions from the company’s 5,000 workers. Andrew Sloan, General Manager of Public Affairs noted that ArcelorMittal Dofasco community support represents much more than donations. “Hundreds of our employees offer not only their dollars, but their time and volunteer hours to support the success of these community partners.   From sitting on Boards to working at events, this continues to be a large part of the “Dofasco way.”

“For several decades, the combined employee and corporate gifts of ArcelorMittal Dofasco have annually led the way in this local United Way Campaign, “ noted Tom Bontje, Chair of the United Way of Burlington and Greater Hamilton. “ But the contribution is not limited to the impact of this wonderful financial generosity.  The countless hours that ArcelorMittal Dofasco employees contribute through their many and varied community volunteer roles provides further evidence of the overall community spirit and investment represented through these extraordinary commitments.”

The Community Strength initiative (www.communitystrength.ca)will focus on one of the 7 key community sectors—United Way, Education, Healthcare, Arts, Sports and Recreation, Environment, and Social Services each week until the annual ArcelorMittal Dofasco Christmas party on December 20th
