December 12, 2008 - ArcelorMittal Dofasco today announced a $700,000 donation to the United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton’s annual fundraising campaign. The donation, which includes a $425,000 donation by employees and a $275,000 corporate contribution, represents the largest single contribution to the United Way campaign.

In presenting the cheque to United Way representatives, President and CEO Juergen Schachler highlighted the generosity of employees.

Dan McLean.

“ArcelorMittal Dofasco and ArcelorMittal Dofasco employees have a long history of generously supporting community organizations such as the United Way," said Juergen. "We do this because we believe we have a responsibility to give back to the community that has been our home for nearly 100 years and to do whatever we can to make it a better place to live.”

“ArcelorMittal Dofasco is proud to be the top contributor to this year’s United Way campaign. But we are especially proud that once again it is employee contributions that make up the largest portion of this year’s contribution.”

United Way of Burlington & Greater Hamilton CEO Darrel Skidmore expressed thanks for the generous donation, “We are fortunate to have the tremendous leadership and support of ArcelorMittal Dofasco in our communities. Indeed, the theme for our campaign this year is “A community is not truly great until it is great for everyone.”

“We all win when fewer of our citizens are living in poverty, when our children arrive at school ready to learn and when our seniors have the opportunity to maintain their dignity and independence. On behalf of United Way, thank you ArcelorMittal Dofasco for helping to ensure that our communities are truly great – for everyone.”

With the second half of the United Way’s campaign now under way, the contribution will create important momentum, said Darrel. It will serve as an inspiration and a reminder of the importance of giving hope to those in need, and how by working together we can create a community which is truly great – for everyone, he added.

The 2008 Hamilton Campaign Chair, Dan McLean, Senior Anchor, CHCH News highlighted the significance of the ArcelorMittal Dofasco donation to United Way and to the communities it serves.

“As the 2008 Campaign Chair I have the privilege of working with our wonderful corporate partners, their employees, our tremendous volunteers – and with my media colleagues – to raise the funds needed to address the challenges facing our communities, and the one in three within them who will require the services of United Way in the next year.”

“In my experience as a community volunteer, this contribution stands out – not only because of its sheer magnitude, but also because it reminds us all that we live in a generous, giving community, a place where collective action is a value we embrace, and where supporting each other is a way of life. As Campaign Chair I would like to thank ArcelorMittal Dofasco, for this tremendous donation to our communities, and for the time and energy, passion and commitment it demonstrates.”
