Electronic Commerce
Guide for Customers

Dofasco and Electronic Commerce

The business world in which Dofasco and other steel producers compete, is changing rapidly. Customers are becoming more and more demanding of their suppliers. Quality service, elimination of errors, just-in-time and supplier managed inventory, are some examples of customer demands to which the steel industry is responding.

The need for Dofasco to electronically link with it's Outside Processing and Outside Storage locations is paramount. All major North American Integrated Steel Mills have been linked electronically for several years and have realized significant business benefits. EDI itself is only an enabling technology - the competitive advantage is achieved through using the information gained or distributed to conduct business more effectively.

Electronic Commerce has the potential to transform the heart of a business, not just by streamlining procedures and cutting costs, but by making possible new ways of doing business that represent major improvements over current operations.

Why did we write this guide?

Dofasco wrote this guide to share our philosophy and strategy about electronic commerce with our Outside Processors and Outside Storage facilities.

We have initially focused on EDI Implementation as an integral part of that strategy. Other technologies such as E-mail and FAX will eventually be added to this guide.

This guide is a "one-stop" reference tool to help you implement EDI at your location.  We have provided what you need to know to begin trading with Dofasco electronically.

The guide is updatable, and we will issue updates as the business procedures change, or as new EDI transaction sets are added.

Updating Your Paper Copy of the Guide

A few minutes to update your guide may save you countless hours when you can least afford it, so please keep your guide up to date. There is no set schedule for the updates, we will issue them as required.

Each update/amendment is numbered. You should always receive the next consecutive number. We will send you an Amendment Notice with any new material for your guide. The Notice instructs you on what pages to remove and replace. That's all there is to it.

If you miss an amendment, please contact:
